Counsels of Light and Love by St. John of the Cross

Blurb:

A manual of simple cautions and points of light and love of the world's most celebrated mystic, St. John of the Cross; introduced by Thomas Merton, perhaps the most famous monk of the modern era.

Review:

Counsels of Light and Love by St. John of the Cross is a powerful discourse for spiritual direction, specifically intended for those committed to life in religious orders, but also applicable to all persons desiring to strengthened their inner convictions in any area through lessons of attentiveness and diligence. I recommend it to those more interested in this topic on a theological or academic level.

Skeletal Mosaic by Marykay Gaines

Blurb:

Max’s touch soothed her anxious feelings.  “I’m enjoying your company, Max,” she purred.

He gave her a mischievous grin.  “I want to skip over the years and just hug you for zooming to visit me in Central America.”

“Okay,” she nuzzled up against his chest. . . the embrace unleashed their passion to anesthetize their earlier fright.  They showered each other with kisses.

“Max, Max. . .” she let his name burst excitedly into the drone of the waves.

Review by Rose Thornton:

Skeletal Mosaic by MaryKay Gaines is a story of romance in a romantic setting. It has an interesting plot, but is somewhat slow-moving with little descriptive color to the plot. Ms. Gaines made a good effort, but misses the mark for me because I was distracted by the unnatural dialogue between her characters, which many times were too wordy and stiff to be realistic. This book also has far too many typographical errors, which also prevented full immersion into her characters. It needed a good proof-reading editor. To her credit, Ms. Gaines incorporates a nice surprise ending, allowing me as the reader to finish her book on a positive note.

I don’t recommend this particular book, but I do believe this author has potential for a future in writing and I would not mind reading her again after some time for her to hone her skills for developing characters and a strong plot line.

Temporarily Employed by Vicki Batman

Blurb:

Hattie Cook's dream job is down the toilet and her new SUV violated. Desperate for cash to cover the basic necessities of rent and food, she takes a temporary job at Buy-Rite insurance company where she uncovers an embezzling scam tied to the death of a former employee—the very one she replaced. The last thing she wants is to clash with by-the-book Detective Wellborn, no matter how much he makes her heart pound.

Allan Charles Wellborn has secretly adored Hattie all his life. He evolved from a pocket protector-wearing geek to a handsome police detective. When the police determine there's more to the death of a former Buy-Rite employee, he steps in to lead the investigation. Overly dedicated, always perfect, he puts his job first, even if doing so ultimately hurts the one he loves.

Can the killer be found before Hattie's time is up?

Review by Rochelle Weber:

Okay, I love Vicki Batman’s writing. Her sense of humor always makes me laugh out loud, so I spent much of the time choking back my laughter, as I read this book while sitting vigil with a hospice patient in the middle of the night.

Despite her depressing circumstances, Hattie manages to land on her feet. She has a great support system in her family, roommate, and friends—the “Funsisters.” Oh, and then there’s Detective A. Wellborn, who seems really interested in her boring temp job at Buy-Rite insurance—especially when she notices a preponderance of claims for stolen parts from Jeeps like hers. And she seems to get a lot of calls when covering the phone at lunch from customers who have a discrepancy between their estimates and the checks they finally received from the company. In fact, a victim of one of those thefts, she’s still waiting for her own check. And why is her supervisor (who criticizes her expensive wardrobe bought with employee discounts) so set against her fighting the ticket and advising her to just pay the $190 dollars even though she couldn’t exactly control having a tail-light out when her whole back-end assembly was missing?

I worked as a temp for almost twenty years and I never had anything that exciting happen to me.

A Passion Most Pure by Julie Lessman

Blurb:

She's found the love of her life. Unfortunately, he loves her sister. As World War I rages across the Atlantic in 1916, a smaller war is brewing in Boston. Faith O'Connor finds herself drawn to an Irish rogue who is anything but right for her. Collin McGuire is brash, cocky, and from the wrong side of the tracks, not to mention forbidden by her father. And then there's the small matter that he is secretly courting her younger sister. But when Collin's affections shift, it threatens to tear her proper Boston family apart. Book 1 of the Daughters of Boston series, A Passion Most Pure will carry your heart from the sophisticated streets of Boston to the green hills of Ireland as men go off to war and women long for their return. Full of passion, romance, rivalry, and betrayal, it will captivate you from the first page.

Review by Donna Hechler Porter:

I can’t say enough about this book. Put simply, I loved it. The plot was strong and sucked me in from the beginning. It was gut wrenching to put down when I picked up it. In my younger years, I could have read all day and night to finish it!
The characters are drawn well, with real problems despite their faith in God, and I really felt like I got to know them. Even more important, I cared about them.  Faith O’Connor’s strong belief in God is admirable, and Colin McGuire’s  quest for peace, which he finally finds, is gut wrenching.

The only thing I could say that would have made it better would have been cutting the length of some sections of introspection after some disastrous events and perhaps a bit more historical details. But in saying that, I’m being extra picky, for neither one of those things mars the overall story.

I will warn readers that these are very Christian books. The characters pray – a lot. However, the message is never preachy, and while there are no explicit sexual forays in the book, the hero is not a Christian, and these are not people who advocate a total hands off approach to relationships between men and women.   There is kissing. There are individuals who work hard to follow the Bible's guidelines, and God's, in their approach to not only courting, but marriage as well. This is a definite and easy 5 roses!

With this book on your shelf, they'll never be able to say "Yankee, go home" again.

Review by Rose Thornton:

Suddenly Southern, by Maureen Duffin Ward, is a light and funny read, informative as well. Although it’s a bit hyperbolic in places, having grown up in the South I can affirm that it is spot-on for the most part. It is based on Ward’s actual experiences in adjustment as a transplant from the North to the South. One of my favorite parts of this book is the look at NASCAR, which starts out with, “Dirt track racing got its official start in Daytona in 1948, and it got its unofficial start from Southern moonshiners after World War II. They made their own booze to avoid paying taxes and raced around the farmlands at breakneck speeds to make sure all their customers could celebrate happy hour. ‘Now, that looks like fun.’ And a sport is born.” Ward continues from there to explain the various elements of NASCAR racing in a humorous, yet accurate way.

This is a great book for traveling, especially if going South. The reader can enjoy the comical aspect as well as become educated on southern peculiarities without the demand for deep-thought and analytic skills that some books require. Enjoy it on your next vacation!

Clear the Decks; Whirlwind Romance by M. S. Spencer

Blurb:

In the aftermath of a hurricane, Lacey Delahaye finds herself marooned on the Gulf coast of Florida with a mysterious man. They are immediately drawn to each other, but before Armand can confess his identity, they are kidnapped and taken far from civilization to a tiny, remarkable island in the western Caribbean.

With the help of her son Crispin, a small, but proud young boy named Inigo, and a cadre of extraordinary characters, Lacey and Armand must confront pirates, power-mad ideologues, and palace intrigue if they are to restore the once idyllic tropical paradise to its former serenity and find lasting happiness.

Review by Rochelle Weber:

I really like M. S. Spencer, but I was beginning to be afraid her books were getting to be a bit formulaic. The last few all seemed to begin with a murder on the heroine’s first day at work. They grabbed me and kept me burning through the pages, and each cast of characters was different, but I confess I was starting to worry.

Whirlwind Romance is very different. Each chapter begins with either a jelly recipe or a pirate-themed sea chanty. Lacey Delahaye’s jellies are well-known and Armand, the man who fetches up in the roots of the mangrove tree outside her home on Florida’s West Coast is far from dead, as he demonstrates while she’s trying to rescue him from drowning. He is, however, on the run—from pirates. No, it’s not an historical story; it’s contemporary. And when said pirates find Armand hiding in Lacey’s house, they kidnap her along with him.

Thus begins an adventure Lacey never imagined getting caught up in. Her greatest ambition was to open a jelly store, not get caught up in piracy or the governmental affairs of a Caribbean island. Oh, and let’s not forget romance. Lacey is definitely caught in a whirlwind, and you will be, too—one you can’t put down. Clear the decks before you pick up this book. I recommend Earl Grey, hot, with crumpets, butter, and red currant jelly whilst you read it.
