The Sackett Brand by Louis L’Amour

Blurb:

In The Sackett Brand, Louis L’Amour spins the story of a courageous man who must face overwhelming odds to track down a killer.

Tell Sackett and his bride, Ange, came to Arizona to build a home and start a family. But on Black Mesa something goes terribly wrong. Tell is ambushed and badly injured. When he finally manages to drag himself back to where he left Ange, she is gone. Desperate, cold, hungry, and with no way to defend himself, Tell is stalked like a wounded animal. Hiding from his attackers, his rage and frustration mounting, he tries to figure out who the men are, why they are trying to kill him, and what has happened to his wife. Discovering the truth will be risky. And when he finally does, it will be their turn to run.

Review:

For me, it was just time for a good old-fashioned cowboy story. I hunger for variety in reading, and I found my fill in Louis L’Amour’s, The Sackett Brand. From the high hill country of Tennessee, the Sacketts are a close family with hardy men who circle their wagons, so to speak, in defense of one another. This time they have come to the rescue of Tell Sackett, who has lost everything to the corruptness of one man-monster, Van Allen. L’Amour’s fictional account never quit moving fast, from the beginning until the very end. Set in the 1870s, it was loaded with colorful descriptive passages to take a reader deep into the action.

I highly recommend this book. It was quite an adventure and a welcome break from the norm on my reading agenda; I enjoyed it extremely.

Strong As Death by M.S. Kaye

Blurb:

Ilona runs from her sheltering mother in order to find the truth, why she’s seeing people who are invisible to everyone else. A mysterious boy named Archer guides her through Brooklyn and introduces her to Hendrick, the man who claims to be her father—though he died in 1890. Ilona must discover not only what she must do to rid the city of Soll, a sadistic and powerful spirit, but also what it means to be half ghost. She proves what her mother told her—love is stronger than death.

Review:

This author starts us out with vivid descriptive action. It is good vs. evil in the ethereal world with haunting; ghosts, spirits, and even an element of schizophrenia…spirits which also interact in the physical world. Strong as Death is a well written novel, intriguing from beginning to end. I did find the ending to be slightly odd fitting with a relatively minor character quite suddenly joined to a major character. However, overall this book was an enjoyable read, and I would recommend it highly.

Once and Again By M.S. Kaye

Blurb:

On her deathbed, Aiden’s mother asks him to find his father, who had left them and disappeared thirteen years ago, shortly after Aiden’s brother died. While searching the roughest area of Baltimore, Aiden meets Maylynn. After eight years of seminary and one year of priesthood, Aiden had thought he was capable of seeing beautiful women in only a platonic way. But Maylynn proves to be too difficult.

Seven years later, Maylynn shows up on Father Aiden’s doorstep for a premarital counseling session with her fiancé. Aiden soon realizes something is wrong, more than just his constant struggle against his attraction—Maylynn and her fiancé, Davis, are hiding something from him.

Review:

I like this author! M.S. Kaye writes a lovely romance novel once again. Once and Again has the right balance of mystery and romance with intriguing twists. Kaye’s characters are the strength of her writing. I am able to get deep inside her characters through her detailed descriptions and vibrant interaction. Her writing develops interest in each character as an individual, and then interweaves their lives to create a strong and appealing plot. I enjoyed this novel and I recommend it highly.

Once by M.S. Kaye

Blurb:

Her first and also her Once.

Jonathan is studying to become a priest. He is three days from taking vows. He will not be a priest.

Rebecca’s major is pre-law. She is supposed to take over her father’s law firm. She will not be lawyer.

Their paths cross at exactly the right moment, when each most needs to hear what the other has to say. Jonathan’s structured life is turned sideways, but Rebecca also helps him learn how to forgive himself. It was self-defense, not murder. Rebecca finds the strength to stand up to her father, to be the real her. If Jonathan likes her writing, it must be worth pursuing.

They must each struggle to forge a new path without each other’s comfort and strength, with only memories of the one day that changed everything.

Review by Rose Thornton:

Once is an intriguing story of love in the forbidden lane, filled with touching descriptive passages that capture the expressive characters of the author, M.S. Kaye. This is a novel about people; it has little relevance to the places in the settings. It is a tale that could have happened in any place, and it is timeless as well. It takes a unique talent to write characters which stand alone as strong as those Ms. Kaye reveals to her readers. It was very easy for me to get deep inside her characters, to laugh with them and to cry with them, and even to feel compassion for the ‘bad’ guy in the end, the compassion her heroine gave me. Ms. Kaye writes a realistic and beautiful work of fiction that I highly recommend. I look forward to reading more from this author.
