Saving Scott: Pine Hills Police, Book Three by Terry Odell

Blurb:

Can a dead body in a chocolate shop revive a battle-fatigued cop? Or will it take the owner of the shop to save him?

Homicide detective Scott Whelan lived for the job—until one day he was caught in the middle of a robbery gone bad. Although some call him a hero, he thinks of himself as a coward and a failure. He exists now in what he calls his “Dark Place.” He accepts a new job as a civilian with the Pine Hills Police Department, thinking being close to the job will be better than leaving it completely. But when he finds himself in the middle of the investigation, Scott has to choose where his loyalties lie—with his brotherhood in blue, or his attractive new neighbor who needs someone on her side. And figure out how to get out of the dark.

Against her parents’ wishes, Ashley Eagan has split from her unsupportive fiancĂ© and moved to Pine Hills to start her dream business: Confections by Ashley. Faced with countless construction setbacks, she fears her plans for the perfect grand opening will be ruined. When a dead body turns up in her shop, a delayed opening is the least of her worries. Now, she’s afraid she’s facing murder charges. Her new neighbor has connections with the police department, but he’s sending mixed messages. One minute he’s the friendly, handsome neighbor, the next, he’s playing cop. Not to mention he’s carrying enough baggage for a world-wide cruise. If Ashley’s learned anything since leaving home, it’s that she’s the only one she can count on.

Saving Scott is the third book in Terry Odell’s Pine Hills Police series. Meet two new residents, and connect with some familiar faces, as Scott and Ashley learn to work together and trust one another. Things heat up hotter than the ovens in Ashley’s bakery when Ashley’s a suspect in a murder investigation.

About the Author:

Terry Odell was born in Los Angeles and now makes her home in Divide, Colorado. An avid reader (her parents tell everyone they had to move from their first home because she finished the local library), she always wanted to “fix” stories so the characters did what she wanted—in books, television, and the movies. Once she began writing, she found this wasn't always possible, as evidenced when the mystery she intended to write rapidly became a romance.

However, her entry into the world of writing can be attributed to a “mistake” when her son mentioned the Highlander television series on a visit home. Being the “good mother,” she began watching the show and soon connected with the world of fanfiction—first as a reader, then as a critique giver, and then, one brave weekend, she wrote her first short story.

Things snowballed, and soon she was writing her first original novel. Much later, she mentioned something about a recent Highlander episode to her son, and he said, “Oh, I’ve never actually watched the show, I just thought the concept was cool.” Little did he know what he’d started.

With a degree in Psychology from UCLA, she loves getting into the minds of her characters, turning them loose in tight spots, and seeing what they do. Too often, they surprise her.

Review by Rochelle:

I received the boxed set of all four Pine Hills Police books in return for an honest review. Unlike so many series I receive, each book stands alone and there are no cliff-hangers! Thank you, Ms. Odell!

After losing his partner and almost losing his life, Scott Whelan has transferred from the detective’s unit of the Polk County sheriff’s department to a civilian job in Pine Hills, one of the small towns in the county. He believes he’s lost his edge, become a coward. Answering phones in the quiet town will keep him close to the job without putting him—or anyone with him—in harm’s way. Until he meets his next-door neighbor, Ashley Eagan.

Ashley has moved to Pine Hills to start over, and to fulfill a dream. She’s opening a chocolate shop, but the construction’s been fraught with delays. They’re the least of her worries, however, when the woman who runs a neighboring business turns up dead in her store, and Ashley is the prime suspect. Scott finds himself drawn into the investigation, and with Detective Randy Detwiler still on his honeymoon, the force is short-handed. Would Scott mind assisting in a consulting role?

Ms. Odell is pretty good at spinning a tale. This time, I really did not see it coming. I did not figure out who the killer was until Scott and Ashley did. Woo Hoo! What a ride!

Hidden Fire: Pine Hills Police, Book Two by Terry Odell

Blurb:

Returning from a stint as part of a task force on violent crime, Randy Detweiler is eager to reunite with Sarah Tucker in Pine Hills, but she’s having second thoughts about their relationship. Can she deal with a cop who gets called away at a moment’s notice, especially one who won’t talk about his job?

Their reunion is cut short when a body is discovered and rumors fly that it’s the work of a serial killer. To make matters worse, the Town Council might disband their police department, and Randy's under added pressure to solve the murder before they take action. Forced to work under the radar, Randy struggles to balance work with a shaky relationship.

Sarah can’t cope with apparently meaning less to Randy than his job. Should she force him to choose between his job and the “us” she envisions for the two of them? All bets are off when Sarah herself becomes a suspect in Randy’s case. Before long, it’s more than their relationship that’s in danger.

A sequel to Finding Sarah, this book was previously published by Cerridwen Press, but has been updated for this edition.

Review by Rochelle:

I received this book in return for an honest review.

I am greatly enjoying this series, and I especially appreciate the fact that each book stands alone. It’s not necessary to read Saving Sarah in order to understand Hidden Fire, nor was there a cliff-hanger ending. Yea! (But I highly recommend Saving Sarah.  It’s good!) Again, the characters were deeply drawn, the pacing was page-burning, and the return trip to Pine Hills was pleasant.

I have to say, however, that for a small town with no crime, they’ve certainly kept police detective Randy Detweiler busy solving murders and… well, read Hidden Fire. I’m not telling what was in those broken mugs in Sarah’s shop, That Special Something.
