American Thighs by Jill Conner Browne

Blurb:

Whether young enough to look "hot" or of the age to only feel that way (in flashes with buckets of sweat), every woman has given, or will give, ample thought to preserving her best "assets" (thighs included), so that the dread transition from "cute girl" to "ma'am" won't be quite so unsettling.

Here are stories of growing up and learning about life—usually the hard way! From disastrous haircuts and color jobs to fashion or verbal faux pas committed, from the kiss wished for but never gotten to the one that should have been skipped, these are the moments that mark each of our journeys from what we thought back then to what we now know. Since to say that Youth is wasted on the Young has got to be the understatement of all time, it falls upon Browne, as one older and wiser, to take a "Hit and Run" down Memory Lane for the sake of offering "Asset-Preserving Tips," with astonishing disclosures about:

  • Why women have risked their lives just to get a little bit blonder.
  • How the muumuu has been fashionably resurrected as the "patio dress."
  • Why it's important to always have a good photo of yourself on hand—just in case.
  • How, no matter what skin you're in, to make it last a lifetime.
  • Why you can never trust anyone over eighty-five.

Review by Rose Thornton:

American Thighs is another hilarious book written by Jill Conner Browne that will give its reader many good laughs as well a thorough education in womanly assets and how to preserve them. Browne’s unique and charming way of getting her point across gives life to yet another insightful book. Although written primarily for the encouragement and entertainment of women, many men will also find this book enjoyable for its light side and eye-opening revelations. I can recommend to both, but definitely for adult ages.

The Sweet Potato Queens’ Guide to Raising Children for Fun & Profit By Jill Conner Browne

Blurb:

The Sweet Potato Queens' Guide to Raising Children for Fun and Profit is a hilarious (though not scientifically tested) wink at the time-honored mysteries of parenting, because anybody who has ever had a kid or has ever known one knows that the experience is neither fun nor profitable -- so you might as well laugh!

As each generation begins its hopeful, happy, and, yes, sometimes harrowing journey as Parent and Child, together they spawn a new body of "knowledge," the nuances of which will elude the Experts every time. Here are stories of the things we do for Mother Love -- or, the most incredibly full-time volunteer job ever -- and tips guaranteed not to be found in any other parenting guide.

·         How to talk to a pregnant woman
·         How the diamonds on delivery policy can speed up the labor nature intended
·         Why a good mother is always adept at subterfuge
·         The list of things you wouldn't think you would have to tell kids not to do
·         Why mothers of sons can never retire
·         Why, for parents, it's just a short drive to the poorhouse

The Sweet Potato Queens' Guide to Raising Children for Fun and Profit will have everyone who's ever been a parent -- or has ever thought of becoming one -- or has ever been a child -- or is still one -- giggling and grinning (no small feat) through those childbearing years...and beyond.

Review by Rose Thornton:

Anyone who is familiar with Jill Conner Browne’s series of Sweet Potato Queen books has likely already read this one because her work is addictive and if you read one, you will want to read them all! Browne is the female Dave Barry of written humor based on real-life. This is another delightful book of hers. If you have yet to read of the Sweet Potato Queens, you are in for a special treat. This book, like the others, is easy to read, well-organized, includes many helpful tips and recipes, and above all is hilarious! I highly recommend it.

God Save the Sweet Potato Queens by Jill Conner Browne

Blurb:

Hallelujah! The Sweet Potato Queens are back!

In 1999, Jill Conner Browne, royal boss of Jackson, Mississippi's own glorious Sweet Potato Queens, introduced them to the world in the hilarious bestseller The Sweet Potato Queen's Book of Love (which contained everything you ever need to know about Love, Life, Men, Marriage, and the importance of Being Prepared). But, fortunately for us, that was not the final chapter in the Queens' splendid saga. The Sweet Potato Queens still have plenty of stuff to say and valuable wisdom to impart about how they went from being Cute Girls to Fabulous Women, including:

Dating for the Advanced, or Advancing
The Joys of Marriage—if you must
More Delicious, Death-Defying Recipes
The Promise for Men—six little words that will make any woman Lolling About—the official activity of the Sweet Potato Queens

And, of course,
The All-True Story of the Two Most Wonderful Men in the World

Not to mention:
Reader Mail—honoring the adventures of brand-new Wannabes and Honorary Queens from around the world

If you haven't met the Sweet Potato Queens yet, this is the introduction you've been waiting for. If you already know the joys of Queendom, this is your official welcome-back party.

Review by Rose Thornton:

This delightful book is the second one written by Jill Conner Browne about the popular Sweet Potato Queens of Jackson, Mississippi.  Although Browne includes a few of the same hilarious tales that she related in her first book about the Queens, there is, by far, enough new material to amuse without repetition.  This unique group of women is ever involved in new ways to have fun with “Queendom.”  They are beloved by women all over the country, many of whom join them in their playful pursuits in their own territory, as well as join them physically in attendance at their annual St. Paddy’s Day Parade…theirs is a GROWING playground.  Men enjoy their antics too, so I would recommend this book to any adult for a good laugh and yummy Queen recipes…just be aware, it’s not about the sweet potatoes. You’ll notice we always include the publisher’s buy link. That’s because authors usually receive 40% of the book price from the publisher. Editors and cover artists usually receive about 5%. When you buy a book from Amazon, Barnes & Noble or another third-party vendor, they take a hefty cut and the author, editors and cover artists receive their cuts from what is left. So, if a book costs $5.99 at E-Book Publisher.com and you buy from there, the author will receive about $2.40. If you buy the book at Amazon, the author will receive about $0.83.

Downloading the file from your computer to your Kindle is as easy as transferring any file from your computer to a USB flash drive. Plug the larger USB end of your chord into a USB port on your computer and simply move the file from your “Downloads” box to your Kindle/Documents/Books directory. You can download your books onto your computer using “Save As” to a “Books” file you create and sort them into sub-folders by genre, author, or however you wish before transferring them to your Kindle. That way, if there’s a glitch with your Kindle, the books are on your computer. Your author will be happy you did when he/she sees his/her royalty statement.

The Sweet Potato Queens’ Book of Love by Jill Conner Browne

Blurb:

To know the Sweet Potato Queens is to love them, and if you haven't heard about them yet, you will. Since the early 1980s, this group of belles-gone-bad has been the toast of Jackson, Mississippi, with their glorious annual appearance in the St. Patrick's Day parade. In The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love, their royal ringleader, Jill Conner Browne, introduces the Queens to the world with this sly, hilarious manifesto about love, life, men, and the importance of being prepared.

Chapters include:
The True Magic Words Guaranteed to Get Any Man to Do Your Bidding
The Five Men You Must Have in Your Life at All Times
Men Who May Need Killing, Quite Frankly
What to Eat When Tragedy Strikes, or Just for Entertainment
And, of course:
The Best Advice Ever Given in the Entire History of the World

From tales of the infamous Sweet Potato Queens' Promise to the joys of Chocolate Stuff and Fat Mama's Knock-You-Naked Margaritas, this irreverent, shamelessly-funny book is the gen-u-wine article.

Review:

The Sweet Potato Queens’ Book of Love is hilarious and uplifting. It is delightfully witty and informative; somewhat the “Heloise Hints” for fun-living. The Sweet Potato Queens are self-proclaimed queens; youth and beauty are not prerequisites...neither is a beauty pageant body because they will remake your body by making you a queen costume with a twenty pound stuffed top out front and a twenty-pound stuffed butt out back. And here are the reflections from their first parade, right from the book:

"The result was mesmerizing. We were true crowd pleasers in these suits, proving that it is possible to please everyone all the time. For white males, it is impossible to have tits that are too big, and for black males, you cannot get the butt big enough. At the same time, if your tits are big enough, white guys don't care how big your butt is; and if your butt's big enough, black guys don't care what's happening around front. (We know all this because the Sweet Potato Queens are multicultural and we've compared notes.)"

This ridiculous good read will keep you in stitches. Enjoy!
