Prodigal Song by Wendy Moser

Blurb:

Outlaw Joshua Manning becomes a fugitive when his companion shoots a young Christian missionary in a robbery attempt a few days before Christmas in 1905. Escaping, he travels alone from Illinois to nearby Wisconsin, taking shelter in a thicket of pine trees. As a bitterly cold snow storm stalls out over the Mississippi River Valley, he falls asleep upon an icy bedroll by his fading campfire. Near death, he dreams about his earlier life.

He remembers his grandmother and the farm hands who made up his family as a young child. When his grandmother died, he was sent to an orphanage. There he met Luke and Russell, who became his family when they left the orphanage together. Outcasts, they formed a band of highway robbers, but thieving never felt right to Joshua, his grandmother's biblical teachings haunting him in his dreams. And his heart aches as memories of Samantha engulf him-Samantha in red velvet. Why did she marry another man when she was promised to him?

On Christmas Eve, he awakens from a deep slumber, a hundred years into the future, hearing the cries of nine-year-old Tommy Barker. Fearing for the boy's safety, Joshua takes him back to his family's farmhouse as the winter storm escalates. Tommy's mother, thankful for the return of her son, invites Joshua to share the holiday with their family.

Eventually, the twenty-first century invades the proceedings, and Joshua is forced to come to terms with his own humanity and spirituality. Together, Joshua and Tommy unravel the mystery that is eternal life

Review by Julie Grimm:

If Prodigal Song by Wendy Moser had a picture on the cover of this book of a man sleeping outside with his horse by a fire, near the woods, with the moon shining down on them, I would have picked this book up sooner! I realize that the cover art was done by her son, which makes it special to her, but I really had a hard time picking it up because the book cover gave me no clue as to what this book would be about.

I love stories from the early 1900’s, and Wendy knits a yarn that brings you back in time. You are there with Joshua Manning as he leaves the orphanage that has been his home. He and his friends from the orphanage become outlaws stealing from others in order to survive. Joshua knows he is making bad choices but feels he doesn’t have any other alternatives. When he meets Samantha, he falls in love, and in order to provide for her decides to go with his friends just one more time. You’ll wander along with him after a robbery gone badly brings him home to find Samantha married to another man for which she will give no explanation.

This love story gets a little confusing at the end as you try to figure out who is related to whom, but it is well worth the read and one you won’t soon forget.

You’ll notice we always include the publisher’s buy link. That’s because authors usually receive 40% of the book price from the publisher. Editors and cover artists usually receive about 5%. When you buy a book from Amazon, Barnes & Noble or another third-party vendor, they take a hefty cut and the author, editors and cover artists receive their cuts from what is left. So, if a book costs $5.99 at E-Book Publisher.com and you buy from there, the author will receive about $2.40. If you buy the book at Amazon, the author will receive about $0.83.

The Little Red Book of Wisdom By Mark DeMoss

Blurb:

The Little Red Book of Wisdom takes the reader on a journey so often sidestepped in favor of the newer, quicker, easier. If you're seeking simplicity in a complicated world, Mark DeMoss's insights will illuminate your path to a wiser and more deliberate way of living. By illuminating the notions of integrity, humility, and self-restraint, DeMoss demonstrates what is possible when we value listening and thinking over talking and doing.

  • Learn why a postage stamp is worth much more than 44 cents, and what time of day wisdom flourishes.
  • Find out the wisest decision anyone can make, and the value of eating lunch alone.
  • Rethink the advantages of technology, and learn how to safeguard yourself against any shadow of deathbed regret.

Step out of the incessant business of your daily life, and spend a few moments learning timeless and foolproof truths that you can apply right away. Wisdom is not just for past generations; it calls to us today. We need only respond.

Review by Rose Thornton:

The Little Red Book of Wisdom, by Mark DeMoss, is basically a values-based “how-to” book for good practical living and success. It combines common sense and good judgment with recommendations on how to apply it to all areas of one’s personal life, including family, business, and social circles. Key components involve techniques for managing time and focus, and helpful suggestions such as “under promise, over deliver” for guarding integrity and gaining respect. I found this book to be insightful thought-provoking. It’s full of guidance that the reader can use to affect his own life directly, or to reaffirm his principles and resolutions. The wise will appreciate DeMoss’ sensible advice and his discerning method of providing it.

Dream Doctor by J. J. DiBenedetto

Blurb:

Between adjusting to life as a newlywed and trying to survive the first month of medical school, Sara Alderson has a lot on her plate. She definitely doesn’t need to start visiting other people’s dreams again. Unfortunately for her, it’s happening anyway.

Every night, she sees a different person and a different dream. But every dreamer has one thing in common: they all hate Dr. Morris, the least popular professor in the medical school, and they’re all dreaming about seeing him—or making him—dead.

Once again, Sara finds herself in the role of unwilling witness to a murder before it happens. But this time, there are too many suspects to count, and it doesn’t help matters that she hates Dr. Morris every bit as much as any of his would-be murderers do.

Dream Doctor is the second book of the Dream Series.

Review by Rochelle Weber:

Sara was an engaging character and it was fun following her through her first month of medical school. Of course, it helps to have a medical background and not be too squeamish when Mr. DiBenedetto describes Anatomy and Physiology class with the smell of formaldehyde and dissecting cadavers. He talks about the need to distance oneself from the people who once belonged to the bodies the students work on—an issue that comes up when the group dissects the part of the arm where one member sustained a traumatic injury, or when a case study closely parallels that of another member’s dying mother.

And all of this fun is wrapped around a great paranormal mystery, as Sara witnesses other peoples’ dreams and tries to figure out which of her least-favorite professor’s would-be murderers is going to succeed in doing away with him, where and when. Not to mention how to help a few other people whose dreams she witnesses along the way—like the friend with the dying mother who has no other family to turn to for support. Mr. DiBenedetto grabbed me at the beginning and kept me guessing right through to the very end. I’m not telling which professor did it in what room or with which weapon. You’ll have to buy the book to find out. Or was it the butler?

Sex, Marry, Kill by Todd Travis

Blurb:

A geek. A fat chick. A slow learner. A psycho suicide girl. A wannabe criminal. Five outcast high school kids with nothing in common except that nobody liked them. Five losers with nothing to look forward to but torment and harassment every day; nothing, that is, until they were introduced to the game.

Sex, Marry, Kill.

An online game that would change their lives and give them power over others. They could do anything they wanted, sleep with anyone they wanted to, kill anyone who got in their way. Their every fantasy fulfilled. But at a mortal price. They soon discover that the game will consume and destroy them unless they find some way to stop it before it’s too late.

For fans of Stephen King and Joe Hill, a dark tale of horror, revenge and gaming gone lethally wrong.

Review by Julie Grimm:

I was so mad when I read the last chapter, I had to knock off a rose. I really would have given this book 5 roses if that last chapter had been left off. Todd Travis had the most perfect and thought provoking ending for Sex, Marry, Kill in the chapter before the last one, so there was no need for the last chapter to get tacked on.

Make sure you read the dedication before beginning your journey through this book. Anyone who has felt out of place and been bullied at school by students, teachers, principals, etc. will feel a connection, and that’s what will draw you into this story.

While on a school bus trip, five unpopular students are found by a dark character who lures them into playing an online game where they can get whatever they want. These kids have put up with so much from people in their lives who have let them down, so they have reason to want revenge. Just how much revenge do they want, and how far will they go? You’ll feel sorry for them, be angry with them, cheer for them and root for them to survive the game. But, will anyone survive, and will they be able to conquer the beast behind the history of the game?

You will really want to know.
